It’s not all about the fells…

Derwent Water Marina
Derwent Water Marina

The Lake District is well known as a destination for hill walking, and certainly a large proportion of our guests do go walking on the fells at some point during their stay. But if you are visiting Keswick, it doesn’t have to be all about the hills, because there is one other rather large and equally scenic attraction – Derwent Water. Here are some ideas for how to have fun on (or near) the water!

The Keswick Launch – with the Keswick landing stage only a leisurely 10 minute walk from our front door, the Launch is always popular with our guests. Leaving regularly and travelling both clockwise and anti-clockwise round the lake, the boats stop at 7 locations (including Keswick), so you can combine a trip with a walk or simply take a cruise around the lake and enjoy the scenery,

Rowing & Motor boats – available to hire from the Keswick landing stage by the half hour or hour, you can enjoy the lake in your own time and without getting your feet wet! You could even row out for a picnic lunch on one of the lake’s islands.

Canoeing – both sit-in and sit-on kayaks and Canadian canoes can be hired by the hour for surprisingly little from Derwent Water Marina and Nichol End Marine, both of which are situated a short distance from Keswick in the village of Portinscale (you can walk there from our front door in under 30 minutes). Wetsuits, life jackets and all other equipment is readily available as part of the fee for these and other activities.

Windsurfing – the conditions are often pretty good for windsurfing on Derwent Water, so windsurfers can be hired from both Marinas.

Stand-up paddle boards – available to hire from Derwent Water Marina, “SUPPing” has become a popular way to get out on the water. Good balance is required!

Sailing – if you are a beginner or an experienced sailor, both marinas offer sailing boat hire and tuition. Derwent Water Marina has Laser 1 and 16s for hire, whilst Nichol End can offer Wayfarer and Topaz sailing boats. Lessons are available at both marinas.

Or failing that, you could always just go for a swim!
